Choruses from the Rock

[by T.S. Eliot]

The Eagle soars in the summit of Heaven,
The Hunter with his dogs pursues his circuit.
O perpetual revolution of configured stars,
O perpetual recurrence of determined seasons,
O world of spring and autumn, birth and dying!
The endless cycle of idea and action,
Endless invention, endless experiment,
Brings knowledge of motion, but not of stillness;
Knowledge of speech, but not of silence;
Knowledge of words, and ignorance of the Word.
All our knowledge brings us nearer to death,
But nearness to death no nearer to God.
Where is the Life we have lost in living?
Where is the wisdom we have lost in knowledge?
Where is the knowledge we have lost in information?
The cycles of Heaven in twenty centuries
Brings us farther from God and nearer to the Dust. Read More…

However, I admit you don’t have to read every verse to understand the story. Read More…

I want to share some thoughts tonight about the shape, the nature, and the nurture of our active lives, our lives in the world of action. I want to define “the active life” very broadly. It might be a life we live downtown in an office, to which we take a train every day. It might be a life lived at home, raising children. It might be a life of citizenship in the larger society. The active life might be lived within the walls of this church or some other voluntary association. Or it might be a life of gardening or artistic creativity. Read More…

The Gospel of the Kingdom by Eldon Ladd

[Part of my study prep for VPM 11-13-2011]

“Apart from the Gospel of the Kingdom, death is the mighty conqueror before whom we all are helpless. We can only beat our fists in utter futility against the unyielding and unresponding tomb. But the Good News is this: death has been defeated; our conqueror has been conquered. In the face of the power of the Kingdom of God in Christ, death was helpless. It could not hold Him, death has been defeated; life and immortality have been brought to light. An empty tomb in Jerusalem is proof of it. This is the Gospel of the Kingdom. Ladd pg 128 Read More…
